PROJECT 29 (Sikorsky Challenge Junior)

City: Kyiv

Project manager: Oleksandr Bigun

Technology readiness level: 1-3

In today's world, public transport is very popular. Usually, it is the metro or tram. In both cases, these are vehicles in which the movement mechanism consists of wheels that move along rails. This interaction generates a fairly large amount of friction, which causes loud noise and leads to wear and tear on the components of the mechanism. Therefore, the relevance of this work is to improve existing modes of transport by using the properties of magnetic field interaction. Research object: creation of a train on magnetic cushions. Subject of research: magnetic fields, interactions of magnetic fields. The plates of the installation are bent at an angle of 35°. This is done so that the magnets (5 on each side), which are attached with non-magnetic screws, create a “magnetic trap” for the train. Two neodymium magnets in the form of rectangular parallelepipeds are glued to the bottom of the installation, which lift the train. We also calculated the parameters of this car in real dimensions.

  1. Mag Lev Trains are old ideas, How do you expect to get linear motion with fixed magnets? Fixed magnet cost is another major problem.
